"Some staff at Country Crest in Lusk have attended a QQI Level 3 Communications, under the auspices of Fingal Adult Education Service, which is part of Dublin and Dun Laoghaire ETB. The course was run under the Skills For Work initiative, so incurred no cost to our company. The ETB staff assessed and highlighted the staff in our company in need of some assistance and development in areas of verbal and written communication.
I felt, as Human Resource Manager, that many of these people were being held back by their lack of confidence in these areas, so I was happy to encourage participation in the programme for those who were a bit reluctant to take part. Most of the participants had left school early and had not completed their education.
The ETB worked around our schedules here and facilitated a Saturday morning programme. We had nine attendees and I would just like to feedback how great the programme was in making the participants more confident in approaching line managers and supervisors. This confidence has led to better engagement in the workplace. There is a noticeable difference now within the staff to listen, do and verbally engage as a result of this course and it has given them a hunger to improve their skills in other areas, such as IT.
I hope to continue to develop these individuals with further programmes under the Skills For Work Programme and would highly recommend it to other employers who have a similar staff profile."
